Last, but certainly not least, studying abroad can help you grow your spiritual life tremendously. Notice I use the word ‘can’ instead of ‘will.’ That's because not everyone will grow in their faith during their semester abroad. However, if you’re diligent with your pursuit of God, there is no better time than during a study abroad.
Studying abroad teaches you just how tiny and insignificant you are in the grand scheme of the world. There are billions of people around the world, and studying abroad may be the first time you every really dwell on this thought. To think that God cares for you and longs for a personal relationship with you and you alone is so incredible. It’s like your favorite celebrity wanting to go out for coffee with you every single day. I’m just blown away by how incredible that is! God, in all his glory and power and with all the people in the world, wants to be with you! Praise be to God for that!
Studying abroad also makes you aware of all the minute details that God has placed on this Earth. I have seen awe-inspiring landscapes, new species of plants and animals, and the sheer creativity and innovation of the human brain. All of these things stem from God and his infinite creative spirit.
God is living and active, and he has created a whole world for us in which to live, to love and to explore. This sprawling world is a present God wants us to unwrap. As children of God, we should do our best to explore the world so that we might draw closer to him. I urge you, if you have the chance, to travel and witness the incredible world around you. If you open your ears, God will speak. If you open your eyes, you will see. If you open your heart, God will come.
