Though I may be utterly biased, I am convinced that the Student Development Office is the best place to work out of all the other jobs. Based on the name, it’s easy to get confused. After all, what even is a student development officer? A student development officer is a person who calls donors and alumni, updating them on current Calvin happenings and asking them to consider once again supporting Calvin College.
The Student Development Office, aka Phonathon, is where the majority of Calvin’s funds stem from. It is an extremely important job to make sure the school secures the funds it needs to continue on. It’s the perfect job for any extrovert who loves to talk to people. The conversations I get to have with alumni are so valuable to me. I’ve had the opportunity to talk to alumni from my major, and ask them the best ways to prepare myself for future jobs. Even better, I’ve heard so many stories of people’s experiences at Calvin. These stories constantly remind me how blessed I am to attend such a wonderful institution.
My other favorite part of Phonathon is the people who work there. We constantly joke and laugh with one another when we aren’t on a call. Additionally, there’s almost always candy on the desk or baked goods in the fridge for us to eat during our break. Our supervisors manage to make our shifts fun, whether it's playing a shift-long game of Jenga or jamming out to a Phonathon shift mixtape. Every day is different from the last, but it's always good nonetheless. I love my Phonathon family, and I'm so grateful I get to work there!
