I still remember receiving the email from Calvin College with the name of my roommate and her cell phone number. I screamed with excitement and nervousness, and immediately began Facebook stalking her (which isn’t really recommended, but still).
I texted her and we talked all summer long. We discussed our hopes, our dreams, our room layout and our everyday lives. We Skyped and grew more and more excited to move in together.
As I began my journey to Calvin College, I became incredibly nervous. After all, I didn’t even know this girl I had been texting all summer long. What if she was really weird? What if she didn’t like me? What if we hated each other?
When I first met her, it was exciting, awkward and new. We knew each other’s summer adventures, but we didn’t even know each other's middle names. The getting-to-know-you stage was both exciting and uncomfortable. It was filled with the exciting “Me too!” moments and the sad and highly emotional discovery of each other’s scars and wounds.
However, throughout all the uncomfortable, our friendship began to blossom. We grew more comfortable around each other and, before we realized it, we had become close friends. This shift led to the most exciting portion of a roomie-ship: the Honeymoon Phase.
